Stubbornly independent political operative Blythe Russell intends to take a rare week off work for a wedding at her family’s opulent Maryland estate. But when a Supreme Court justice dies just as DC power-player guests begin to arrive, Blythe gets back to work, determined to lobby for her cousin/best friend Hiro to get the nomination.
August Marcek worked his way up from the streets of Queens to a new job in the White House. The chief of staff makes August his wedding plus-one so they can work on bringing him up to speed. To survive this nightmare field trip, August will have to bury the feelings he still has for Blythe, formerly his partner in work and life, and steel himself for the skirmish of wits to come.
Amidst wedding week events, Blythe and August’s friends and family make a game of tricking the two contrarians into rekindling their feelings by the time the cake is cut. Just as they begin to succeed and the President short-lists Hiro for the nomination, a slanderous story breaks that could ruin both Hiro and Blythe. August must decide whether to risk losing his dream job to help Blythe discover and discredit the source. And Blythe must decide whether she can trust August enough to let him.
